Providing Seasonal Lodging Since the 1930’s

Green Acres Cabins has been providing overnight and extended lodging for the nature lover, the outdoor enthusiast and for family vacations for well over 75 years. Since the early 1900’s our cabins have been a summer destination for travelers in search of serene surrounding and plentiful outdoor activities.

Our Story

From Doring Tea House & Overnight Cabins to Green Acres Cabins

Maurice and Mabel Pickel bought what were then the Doring Tea House and Overnight Cabins in April 1938. In November of 1941 they changed the name to Green Acres and identified them as tourist cabins. Nana Pickle is a legend to the Green Acres “children” who had returned year after year for weekly summer vacations at the lake. There are may fond lifelong memories of popsicles on the porch and carefree days spent exploring, swimming, fishing and hiking at beautiful Lake Willoughby. After Maurice passed away, Mabel continued to run the cabins until she told them in the early 1970s.

Modern Conveniences Added in the 1980s

Phyllis and Fred Mueller bought Green Acres in the early 1980s. They lovingly refurbished and modernized the cabins. They enclosed part of the front porch to enlarge the indoor living area allowing for both small dining and seating areas. They kept many of the original features, but allowed for modern conveniences such a running water from a drilled well, a kitchen stove and refrigerator. The business again flourished as families, fisherman, and travelers returned year after year.

Then Came the Cashin Family

The Cashin family arrived with six children in 1998, hoping to experience the great outdoors and the beauty of Lake Willoughby, as Bill Cashin did as a youth. They took pride in providing clean, comfortable and affordable surroundings. They focused on keeping it simple and creating a relaxing environment.

“It All Started with a Family Vacation to Lake Willoughby in 1994

We came to Vermont in 1994 for a family vacation with our then 5 children in tow. Bill had vacationed at Lake Willoughby as a child and had wanted to take me here. We had lived on a small lake in Massachusetts so had always appreciated the water, but as we came from the North over the hill near Route 58, the beauty of THIS lake took my breath away.

Purchased the Property in 1998

A few years later, after our 6th child and a very busy life – we decided to sell everything and move to Vermont, to the Northeast Kingdom. We rented for a year in Barton, and in 1998 were able to realize our hopes of buying property on Lake Willoughby, that wonderful property being Green Acres Cabins.

Sharing our Piece of Paradise with Others

Our children are now grown and the clean, clear water, the trees, the fresh air and our large lawn have provided them with memories for a lifetime.  We are fortunate they all remain close, as Lake Willoughby is now part of who they are.  We love being part of the Green Acres’ story and want to continue to share our “piece of paradise” with other families, couples or individuals so they too may experience Lake Willoughby.” - Elaine and Bill Cashin (Previous Owners 1998 - 2023)
